Review of Hell or High Water (2016) by Barney O — 27 Nov 2016
WHAT I LIKED: This is real back to basics cinema brought into the modern age; a study of two well-developed character groups in plots wonderfully at odds with each other. Instead of mindless action and black and white good or bad, intense focus is drawn to the writing, cinematography and amazing performances, and as a result this is one of the most satisfying experiences of the year. Don't go thinkin' it aint got style though, because the tight humour and solid score deliver a home run in that department too.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Once it's got going, the plot is rather basic 'highway to the end' stuff, which makes it feel a little dragged out.
VERDICT: A well constructed movie from Mackenzie that's brilliant elements aren't quite given the time to shine by the plot direction. It is full of brilliant stuff, though.
