Review of Hell or High Water (2016) by Wayne M — 29 Oct 2016
Hell or High Water is probably the intelligent drama you have been searching for that also includes a good slice of action, suspense and comedy. In fact it's one of the best cinema experiences this year.
Even though the story is nothing new it's supremely well done. Armed with a great script and flawless performances this film moves with good pace and great heart. Two brothers revert to robbing banks to save their late mother's ranch.
They are complicated characters whose path is known but there are surprises along the way. All the actors are great but Jeff Bridges steals the show as the crusty Texas ranger hunting them down. To add another layer there is plenty of succinct commentary on the state of America, especially the woes of rural Texas.
Oh, one more thing, the score by Nice Cave and Warren Ellis just adds to the pleasure.
