Review of Hell Night (1981) by Ian B — 03 Feb 2008
Another of the cheesy slasher greats from the 80's. Forget The Exorcist.....this is my favorite Linda Blair movie! ....and it has nothing to do with the amount of cleavage she shows. Hell Night sets itself apart from others like it by actually developing the characters before the shit hits the fan and changing the setting to a creepy haunted house.
Of course the acting is piss-poor and the story holds no surprises, but it doesn't really matter since the movie is actually scary! I was surprised at how many of the film's set-pieces and jumpy bits were still so effective.
The scenes in the hedge maze and tunnels hold up especially well, and that part with the floor rug gets me every time. This is probably the most atmospheric of all the slasher films to come out of the early 80's.
They just don't make em like this anymore.
