Review of Hell and Back (2015) by Dane P — 10 Jan 2016
This was just as I expected it to be. For adults, but not very mature. Hell & Back follows Augie, Curt and Remy discovering The Book of Beelzebub and making a blood oath over it which ends badly and they open up a portal to Hell.
In Hell, Curt gets captured by the demons and now it's up to Augie and Remy to save him! After watching the trailer, it seemed like an interesting idea for an animated movie and it looked like it could be funny.
The story is interesting and I love the portrait of Hell and Satan in this movie. It's very comical and entertaining, but never really funny. Many jokes fall flat because they're mostly just toilet humour, but there are a few good ones that got me, especially the ongoing background story of Orpheus being raped by a tree as a kid, that was quite a funny addition to the character.
The characters aren't well developed and I don't even think anyone watching this kind of a movie would even care for that sort of thing. But, they're entertaining. Again, this movie isn't really all that funny, but it's entertaining! It's good fun.
The animation looks great. It feels a lot like ParaNorman at times. The voice-acting was good, though some lines very oddly delivered. All in all, this movie is very fun, has great animation, interesting story and although it's not really funny or anything revolutionary, I'd recommend it to fans of this kind of animated movies.
