Review of Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001) by James R — 04 Oct 2008

Now bear with me here, because this movie requires several mental left turns just to be understood, let alone enjoyed--and, like The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig pushes all kinds of envelopes. Mostly because it can. As a result, its plot and resolution are full of moments that leave the audience going "um..." and "oh" and "what!?".

BUT also like the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig's primary means of entertainment is not its acting or its story but its music. And Hedwig's music, though sometimes lyrically a bit bizarre, is powerful, moving, and performed with blistering glam-rock energy. The music makes the whole movie worth watching...even if you are turned off or freaked out by the storyline, the music will carry you through.
