Review of Hector and the Search for Happiness (2014) by Jeff H — 10 Mar 2015
This movie failed to live up to my expectations of it. It could easily have been an episode of Karl Pilkington's series, The Moaning of Life, combined with some of the leftover ideas from the movie version of The Secret World of Walter Mitty.
Book-ended by scenes from his life in London, Hector visits three very different locations looking for the meaning of happiness. The unlikeliness of his experiences in China, combined with the juxtaposition of what he experiences in Africa (seemingly a country in the movie, but that's probably not to confuse American audiences) do not make for a believable plot.
He then travels to (I think) San Francisco to catch up with an old flame, only to discover he is not foremost in her thoughts. Simon Pegg needs to get a better agent or stick to Star Trek, Mission Impossible, and wholly British movies.
