Review of Hector and the Search for Happiness (2014) by Aaron C — 20 May 2015
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be; and many such winning quips, scattered throughout this quirky ungrown-boy journey, as a midlife-shrink hops around the world in pursuit of his Tintin dreams. Pegg doesn't disappoint and neither do grumpy rich Skarsgard, violent professional druglord Reno, and toy-playing academic Plummer.
Collette & Pike are the reality-anchoring women in Hector's meaningless existence and what a ride it was, through the dreary psychiatric clinics of London, to the best that Shanghai can buy, the heights of Tibetan wisdom, African sweetpotato stews & lockups, and eventually the high-tech labs of the US, before it all comes predictably/reassuringly, happily, full-circle; crisis, journey & bildungsroman concluded.
