Review of Heavy Metal (1981) by Luke S — 05 Dec 2008
Fluctuates wildly between pure awesome and very off-putting immaturity. For the most part, the bits that aren't juvenile sexual fantasy are pretty fun. The best thing is that it's essentially a collection of shorts with excitingly varied styles, so, when one you don't like comes along, just wait a few minutes and you'll be on to the next one.
And the awesome ones are pretty awesome. It's got a noble pterodactyl battle-steed, a zombie-infested WWII bomber plane, plenty of dismemberments, lots of rotoscoped animation (which I always find interesting) and all sorts of other fun bits.
Worth a look for animation fans, but not particularly good, over all. I'd recommend just finding the short entiltled "B-17" online. That's the best bit in it.
