Review of Heavy Metal (1981) by Thomas W — 02 Apr 2009
Time has not been kind to "Heavy Metal", but I still love it. Advances in animation have come a long way since 1981, and this film has parts that are just a few steps above cave drawings. All that aside, this film is a true cult classic in every way.
The stories are kind of weak and confusing, but you can't stop watching. I have seen this so many times that it never needed to fully make since, it was more of an "Experience" film. Being a fan of the "Heavy Metal" magazine, I think the film does a good job of portraying what the magazine is all about.
The film cleans up the content a little for the general movie going public, but maintains the outrageously confusing storylines that I came to love all those years ago. This film goes one step futher than the magazine by adding an awesome soundtrack, which unfortunately is also a little dated.
..I still rock it out anyhow. This film is not for everyone, but I know it is still loved by many after all these years.
