Review of Heavy Metal (1981) by Dustin M — 03 Nov 2009
I have heard for some time that I should watch the Canadian animated feature Heavy Metal. Most people described it as ?interesting?, so I thought to myself: ?Oh no?This is gonna be bad isn?t it.? I was most definitely right. Basically Heavy Metal is a hodgepodge of stories that revolve around a green glowing sphere which represents pure evil. I?m not going to get into the stories, because they essentially have no meaning or purpose, and it would be a waste of my time to try to explain them.
After brief thought, I came to the conclusion that Heavy Metal did have a purpose, and that was to entertain. And by entertain, I mean show as much sex, drugs, violence, and rock and roll as a 1980s animation could, by legal standards. The animation varied in quality from scene to scene, but overall it was not bad. I really have nothing to say in regards to the acting, script, or cinematography; suffice to say they were minimal and poor. The plot was laughable, nothing really linked the stories together with any cohesion, and the ending seemed rushed and nonsensical. The music was decent, but ultimately background noise in this mish mash feature. That?s it. There is nothing left to say.
This was definitely entertaining despite its poor quality. I don?t know if I can consciously recommend this film, but I will say this: If someone were to give me this film as a gift, I might not throw it away. I give Heavy Metal 3.9 stars out of 10.
