Review of Heavy Metal (1981) by Ivan S — 01 Mar 2010
If I was 13 years old when I first saw Heavy Metal, I hate to admit I would probably have loved it. It's nothing but shameless power fantasies, lots and lots of boobs and blood, and an anthology format based on a glowing green ball that is the root of all evil.
Actually, that still sounds pretty good, but unfortunately Heavy Metal does not do any of it well. Maybe it's just really really dated now and nostalgia is the only thing keeping it going, but... people do really like this movie.
I tried three or four times just to start it and when I finally did get through it, it was with some liberal fast forwarding. I just... It's just... The movie sucks. There. Heavy Metal is a shitty movie and the only reason anyone should watch any of it is to understand that South Park episode that made fun of it.
If a bunch of nerdy teens who had never seen a movie before wanted to make a movie, this is what it would be. Soundtrack kicks ass though.
