Review of Heavy Metal (1981) by Donyale H — 19 Apr 2012
Heavy Metal has its merits, namely its soundtrack, add it also has its faults, less than stellar voice acting and animation that hasn't aged well, but it still remains a film worth seeing, at least once.
It has a style similar to that of the magazine, at least as I remember it, and it is essentially a series of short stories all linked together by a single thread. There is copious amounts of nudity, nearly all of which is there purely for titilation, as no woman passes the opportunity to disrobe.
The highlight of the film for me was the soundtrack, although not a lot of the songs remain favorites of mine over the years. A movie well worth a look for those that enjoy the magazine and/or adult-oriented animation.
But not one you may be inclined to revisit. The story is also eerily similar to that of The Fifth Element, which is a better and more entertaining film. I would recommend that if you were to chose one or the other, pass on Heavy Metal.
