Review of Heaven's Gate (1980) by Murder C — 21 Dec 2011
The story behind the movie "Heaven's Gate" is a very interesting one. After the success with "Deer Hunter", director Michael Cimino got pretty anything he wanted from the United Artists studio for this project.
Cimino being a perfectionist (50 takes for one scene was not unusual) went over budget and behind schedule right from the start. The original cut of the movie was 5 hours and 25 minutes long, and the studio had Cimino cut it down to 3 hours and 40 minutes.
Once the film was released it was a boxoffice and critical flop, resulting in United Artists being sold to MGM not to go bankrupt and destroying Cimino's career (that never recovered). Now, with that story being told, you can skip the whole movie as it is not nearly as interesting.
"Heaven's Gate" is nothing but a dragged out bore-fest with some good actors sadly wasting their time and talent at. It sucked then, and it sucks now.
