Review of Heavenly Creatures (1994) by Caleb O — 16 Mar 2011
3 out of 5 stars. Heavenly Creatures is based on a true story about 14 year old Pauline Parker and 15 year old Juliet Hulme. These two girls established a friendship which evolved into an obsessive relationship over a short period of time.
Often times it appeared they were living in a fantasy world. They worshiped and pretend to be a variety of opera singers, actors and royalty. Family members of the girls became concerned regarding the intensity of their relationship, and they also feared the girls might be lesbian.
Parents decide the girls should never see each other again. Pauline and Juliet will not accept not being able to spend time together anymore so they plan to murder Pauline's mother, who they see as the main person preventing their happiness together.
This film is underrated, even though it is Kate Winslet's first film. I personally did not like the fantasy world scenes with the clay people, but those parts did help to reinforce how disconnected both girls were from reality.
The closing 15 minutes or so does a great job of building upon suspense, even though we already know what is going to happen, and the last minute is quite disturbing.
