Review of Heavenly Creatures (1994) by David C — 23 Jul 2010
A very odd film but perhaps that's why I liked it. Some have complained that this movie is all over the place, and it is, but it works that way. There is such a blend of genres in this film, overall it plays as a drama, but there are many moments where it becomes a fantasy as well and there as also moments of a thriller and a comedy in there.
The story behind the movie is quite odd and disturbing as it is, so why not make the movie the same way? Makes sense to me. Both main characters are great, the first film for both Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey and it's a great start for both of them and they play their respective characters very well.
This movie is quite depressing, but at the same time it's filled with some imagery that is quite the opposite. Like I said, quite an odd film, but very interesting and enjoyable.
