Review of Heavenly Creatures (1994) by Luz Mar O — 30 Jul 2010
Peter Jackson's first entry into drama is no disappointment. It's a disturbing, yet spellbinding film that requires another viewing.
Based on a true story of Parker and Hulme, set in a 1954 New Zealand, schoolgirl Pauline Parker becomes friends with a girl from England named Juliet Hulme. They form a friendship that knows no bounds, and is virtually unbreakable. But when things get too intense, the parents do what they can to prevent things from going to far, leading to what would become a well-remembered story.
It seems strange that after 3 gory films, Jackson would want to take such a daunting task as telling the story of the Parker-Hulme murder story. But he succeeds in every way possible, balancing story-telling and character development with stunning visuals.
Kate Winslet is flawless in her debut as Juliet Hulme, and Melanie Lynskey is just as good as Pauline Parker.
If you think you're familiar with Peter Jackson from just seeing "The Lord of the Rings," believe me, you ain't seen nothing yet.
