Review of Heaven Knows What (2015) by Peter F — 26 Sep 2016
If the Safdie brothers only intended for Heaven Knows What to be a non-glamorous look at a young heroin addict, then they succeeded profusely. Shot in a un-polished style that's akin to college student films, Heaven Knows What actually connects with young and vulnerable people through its aesthetic alone.
The editing job, however, is where the film really finds its craft, and with a soundtrack provided by indie wunderkind Ariel Pink, you can be assured that this will be one disturbingly effective experience.
Add a career starting performance from Arielle Holmes and you have a truly staggering picture, if not necessarily an original or affable one.
