Every now and then, you come across a film that opts for simplicity and storytelling rather than special effects and cool, stylish bells and whistles. In 'Heaven is for Real,' a film based on the bestselling book of the same title, the incredible story of the Burpo family of small-town Nebraska.

The financially-struggling family of a minister is dealt a close call when their youngest member, our-year-old Colton (Connor Corum) has a near-death experience and can suddenly recount his adventures in heaven.

The story is sweet, and the issues of skepticism, faith and forgiveness are confronted head-on. In terms of acting, Greg Kinnear does a pretty good job as the patriarch of the family - he comes off as a regular working-class guy who's doing the best he can to provide and protect his family.

The rest of the acting, however, is not much to write home about. Kelly Reilly's portrayal of Sonja Burpo comes off a bit forced, and Thomas Haden Church, who is usually a top-notch actor, feels too subdued here.

And while 'Heaven' is a low-budget effort ($12M, to be exact), there are a few instances when it feels more like a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie than a theatrical release. Still, that doesn't detract from the overall film.

'Heaven is for Real' is a rare case where Hollywood tries a little something new - taking a risk that pays off for everyone involved.
