Review of Heaven Is for Real (2014) by Steve G — 15 Mar 2015
Very nice, lovely film. More than anything, I was happy to see a life I'm familiar with portrayed, & portrayed fairly well. Beautifully shot.
I wasn't sure what the conflicts were, or if/how they were resolved, but whatever.
The Jesus apparition could have been better. Not sure punching classmates should be encouraged. And hard to believe a faithful church-goer would get angry at another for believing in the reality of heaven. Those were the three main points that I had trouble with. I do wish that the conflict was more clearly defined. I wasn't sure why a kid believing he went to heaven would be cause for turmoil.
It wasn't a full gospel presentation, but just because it didn't have full detail, doesn't mean a film shouldn't capture some. I expect a child to do addition before trig. In the same way, with respect to Hollywood -- because it wasn't comprehensive, doesn't mean I should oppose something done well, in part. The good is not the enemy of the great, in this case.
Again, a quaint enough film.
Prediction: Critics will dislike it. Also, the sun will rise tomorrow.
