Review of Heathers (1989) by Kevin Val B — 11 Dec 2009
If you've ever had fantasies of feeding poison to that snooty queen bee who taunted you in high school, then Heathers might just give you an orgasm. Relentlessly caustic and fascinatingly dark, Heathers tells you the story of two teenagers trying to cope with a frustrating high school caste system.
The guy is sick of the twisted high school social structure. So he tricks his girlfriend (Winona in her starry, breakout role), the class brain who can't stand the popular clique she's in, into killing the campus figures.
Of course, it's not soon before girl realizes if you kill the beast, a beastlier creature will take its place. Essentially the 80's reincarnation of this decade's Mean Girls, Heathers indulges in the kind of frilly fun that comes with bringing karmic retribution to the mean people who deserve it - only with a more morbid twist.
Yeah, the shoulder pads are distracting, but this film's giddily sick relish more than makes up for it.
