Review of Heathers (1989) by Jason D — 28 Feb 2010
Before any of this bullshit like Mean Girls, Jawbreaker, or Juno came out, there was Heathers, and insanely good and introspective look at the dark world of high school. Heathers is the story of a trio of THE popular girls of school, who all go by the name of Heather.
Their latest recruit, Veronica (Winona Ryder), is half-heatedly trying to be a part of it, but cannot stand how superficial and mean-spirited the girls are, namely the head Heather (the late Kim Walker, who must've ate a brain tumor for breakfast.
Sorry, I couldn't resist). After she hooks up with new bad boy Christian Slater, the two accidentally kill Walker and make it look like a suicide. The supposed suicide turns Heather into an even more iconic figure amongst the high schoolers.
With that, Slater and Ryder start killing more of the popular kids in school, with Ryder doing it accidentally while Slater does it with psychotic melee. Overall, Heathers is one of the ultimate definitions of cult classic.
It was smart, ahead of its time, and completely insane. Incidentally, director Michael Lehmann and writer Daniel Waters haven't managed to create something as good as Heathers throughout their career, and now with Ryder's career in the dumps, she's looking to do a VERY unnecessary sequel.
I say leave this classic alone. It's too good to be given a weak, much too late cash-in sequel. Heathers is a winner.
