Review of Heathers (1989) by David Ray G — 16 Apr 2010
By the late 80's teen suicide had become rampant, and while the media as well as people who were directly affected by it were still trying to deal and understand the reason behind it all, a group of young unknown filmmakers were working on a film that was about to cause a shit storm. Heathers is a movie that really shows you what it's like to be an outcast, or even just an average kid, in high school. It doesn't hold back when exposing the jocks, preps, and popular cliques for the mindless, heartless, and shallow humans that they are. But best of all, it gives the media and parents the answer for the sudden explosion of teen suicide while at the same time making fun of it by blaming it on fads and trends, while also turning the trend of 80's high school movies on it's head.
BEAUTIFUL! !
Daniel Waters wrote a near perfect script filled with pitch perfect black comedy and some of the most original dialogue before or since. Winona Ryder and Christian Slater are brilliant in their roles as opposite ends of the "outcast' spectrum, and Michael Lehmann does a great job at making the film feel like John Hughes on crack. A must see for cult film fans, or anyone into subversive ideas. And to all those popular kids in high school, yes, this is how we saw you.
