Review of Heathers (1989) by Michael V — 12 May 2010
I really love this movie and almost everything about it. The dialogue is very stylized and unique, as the writer was hoping not to date himself or the movie by using slang and vernacular that was popular at the time, so he decided to make up his own, some that is still used, unbeknownst to most, today.
Dark story line, and different from the typical 80s comedy, yet, so familiar. It's a nice under the radar kind of comedy that got a lot of crap during the time for content and the way suicide was used in the movie, which makes it that more effective.
John Hughes and many other 80s teen film directors wish they could have been up to doing something like this. Sure, with content the way it is today, it wouldn't be hard to do this type of movie, but for the 80s it was something different.
Case in point, the soon to be made "Heathers" TV show. Not sure how I feel about that one.
