Review of Heathers (1989) by April W — 14 Oct 2012
The PROM KING AND QUEEN of all high-school movies is this one. Heathers! Why do you ask? Because it has everything you want from a high-school movie, an outcast whom hates her friends befriends a psycho rebel whom both plan to end the rule of the Heathers. Whom are they? They are group of 3 girls with the same name-Heather (2 of them blonds and one of them is a brunette). The fourth girl is Veronica Sawyer portrayed by Winona Ryder, whom is a member of the group since her parents are rich, then she must be one of the popular girls as well. She hates her new friends since she broke a friendship with a friend that she liked more than the Heathers and when Heather No. 1 invites her to a party with full jerks that want to make out with her, especially football players Kurt and Brat, she wants to kill them. But Veronica meets an interesting rebel in school called Jason Dean, portrayed by Christian Slater whom is a person you shouldn't me messing with, but as the plot of the film goes a long you see that JD doesn't have really good intentions.
Why is this movie different from other high school movies? Let me give you my reason, the movie has a plot, unlike the high-school musical movies that we have seen from Disney, these revolves around people that we can connect with. ALL the characters in this movie have a purpose, and when JD comes up and pulls the gun is like a breath of freshness and originality that I saw in this movie that you are blown away by it. Haven't you wanted to get back at people that bullied you, didn't you wanted to see what will happen to them. This is move is sort like a revenge-bully movie that shows you the consequences of vengeance, the consequences of letting your impulses get the better of you, why is it important to let go and not let anyone else put you down. It also shows how important it is to choose your friends and choose whom you love.
Lets take a look at Veronica Sawyer- she's the type of person we are were back in High School, a person that should be happy because shes attractive and popular but sad because shes conscious that shes surrounded by people that she hates and would love to kill but doesn't have the courage to do so until she meet JD.
Lets take a look at Jason Dean- the character we all want to be, cool, rebel, do whatever he wants, and kills all the bullies without remorse. Hes the symbol of vengeance against the people that we are bad to him and I almost pity him when I discovered his back-story.
The film is also funny because is a combination of dark comedy because a lot of things happen in this movie that make you laugh because you have been through it all. The scene of the funeral of Heather No. 1 is what be considered a great element of surprise because you realize that no one cared about her in this movie. The movie also has a message and that message is that when you do something wrong towards a person you should apologize to him or her like Veronica does at the end of this movie. That no matter how popular we are, we were also nerds at some point in our lives. We should be surrounded by the people that love us.
I seriously loved the climax of the movie because it shows you why JD wants to do this, and you sort of connect with him, you sort of like I do agree with you, but I don't think you should do it.
These movie those have it flaws, but I will pass those flaws because it has a great story, amazing dialogue, incredible characters and a powerful message that I think everyone should see. This movie is so good that it has en educational value that it should be shown to High School to show what High School really is. Even do is an R-rated movie (for violence and strong language) High School movies should learn something by watching this film.
This film was directed by Michael Lehmann, not much is know from him but this is his best film. This is without a doubt Winona Ryder and Christian Slater's best film! Even do Winona really makes great performances in The Age of Innocence and Little Women, this one is a classic!
If you are an outcast, a person that really felt alienated from everyone during your high school years then you should see this one. I really hadn't a lot of respect towards the comedy genre until I saw these movies because I saw them as really cheesy movies that their purpose was to make you laugh, but this is one is just a laugh-riot! and thought-provoking at the same time. And if there is something called the "high-school" genre then this movie takes the crown, you won't be disappointed!
