Review of Heathers (1989) by Jess L — 06 Feb 2013
Heathers is a high school film that actually manages to capture the feeling of being an outsider where others fail. Although Veronica (Ryder) is in fact a semi-popular student, from the film's outset she has had enough of trying to keep up appearances and her fellow clique members' bullying of the other kids.
What ensues is a wild ride through legitimately funny black comedy territory: Veronica meets J.D. (Slater), a rebel student who helps her get revenge on the popular Heathers, only to end up killing them.
He leads Veronica along, telling her they were just mistakes, but she soon realises his morbid intentions and wisely puts an end to her involvement in his schemes. The film is smartly written for what is essentially an '80s high school film beneath it all, and its actors give convincing performances and sell the material well enough to make it a cult classic for the ages and anybody who ever felt victimised.
