Review of Heathers (1989) by Meredith W — 19 Jul 2014
A dark, funny and crazy cult classic with a Jack Nicholson-esque Christian Slater, a pseudo-self-loathing Winona Ryde and a pre-90210 Shannon Daugherty. It is a bitter movie (no character is portrayed in a flattering manner).
Such is this delightful tale of homicide and suicide among popularity-seeking social climbers and mainstream rejects at a typical suburban high school, that the best description is a cross between Tim Burton and John Hughes.
Although it's been done many times since (best perhaps in "Mean Girls"), this was an early and successful parody of adolescent sub-cultures, teen angst, and the desire for popularity.
