Review of Heathers (1989) by Art S — 06 Aug 2014
I never watched this back in the day and seeing it now is a rather weird experience (the fashion and hair, for one thing). It certainly has panache in its desire to be a black comedy -- but it also has more than its fair share of cringeworthy moments (as do ALL teen comedies).
Winona Ryder carries the film and Christian Slater while not bad (although his channelling of Jack Nicholson is at its peak here) gives a performance that at this point in history has the ability to remind one of the Columbine shootings.
Or rather it is the plot that sees Slater and Ryder kill off the popular kids (and then him threaten to blow up the school) that doesn't feel quite so funny anymore.
