Review of Heathers (1989) by Ashley H — 01 Mar 2010
After not seeing this for about five years, I completely forgot how utterly amazing it is. It is by far the greatest anti-John Hughes/anti-pop culture in existence. At a time when feel good movies were all that existed, this managed to come out.
What I like is that it mirrors and slams even the movie making process of the time. The lighting is absolutely bizarre, so many crazy colors. The acting is perfect and completely honors the feel of the story.
You couldn't ask for a better pair of leads, Winona Ryder and Christian Slater pull off deranged killers all too well, while also bringing a lot of sympathy to their roles. It's a perfect criticism of high school, clicks, fashion, etc.
On top of all this, it's just way too fun. I could watch it twenty times and still find something new.
