Review of Heat (1995) by Dana W — 10 Dec 2011
Possibly Michael Mann's best film, and he's already made some great ones, as well as some okay ones. This film is probably his most complete film, there really isn't much to complain about, even the length seems like it's absolutely just right. Unlike his latest outing in the modern crime world with Miami Vice (which was just way too long, 40 min of it was totally worth deleting for special features).
The writing on this is pretty top notch, ever character in the film is exactly where they need to be. When you watch this for the first time, you kinda think characters are forgotten, but nope, they show up right where they need to be, and are used perfectly to move the story along. The parallel between Pacino and De Niro's characters are great. The cinematography is definitely classic Michael Mann too.
I know they shouldn't do anything with this film, but I think it would be awesome, if they did a prequel with one of the cases that are mentioned between De Niro and Voight's character when they are discussing what kind of cop Pacino's character is. That would be cool, plus it would be set in Chicago. Maybe Michael Mann will do it someday?
