Review of Heat (1995) by Jeff T — 13 Apr 2012
Robert De Niro plays a thief looking to retire after one last score. Al Pacino plays a cop who is determined to capture him. That sounds like a typical set-up for a crime movie, but Heat rises above genre cliches thanks to the surprising depth of its storytelling.
The thrills of the action scenes are terrific, but those parts are backed up by involved acting and affecting penetration into the characters' lives and backstories. Written and directed with precision by Michael Mann, Heat is much bigger than the sum of its parts.
