Review of Heat (1995) by Julie T — 27 Apr 2014
I must start by saying I believe this to be one of the best films ever made its sort of perfect. The writing, directing and acting come together to give a film that is clever, thrilling and human. It's not predictable, you find yourself routing not only for the hard done by dedicated police officer ( Pacino ) but also for the clever cool calculating criminal ( DeNiro ) , they each our following their path, their lives are inextricably linked and they actually respect each other in a strange way, each understanding the roles that have been allotted them.
Rather in the tradition of crime shows like the "Sopranos", "Cagney and Lacey" we see them as rounded people with girl friends, wives family's beside simply seeing what they do to earn a living.
But this isn't some deep let's search for the meaning of life, film, it's a fast paced thriller, full of twists and turns, a great logical plot, and some great set pieces , if you're not on the edge of your seat during some of it, or shouting " Nooo" at the screen I'd be very surprised.
I particularly love the scene in the container yard, genius , and the cup of coffee shared by DeNiro and Pacino where they counterpoint each other beautifully, cinema gold.
