Review of Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991) by Bill W — 04 Jan 2008
This is hard to rate. It is probably better than it felt like, but there had been so much hype on it prior to seeing it that my expectations were pumped and the film fell short of them. Although a director/producer is involved in a myriad of activity and detail in the making of a film, this documentary mainly concerns itself with the relationships between a director and his actors.
Eleanor Coppola skillfully presents the dance between on scene activity, years later interviews and clips from the actual film. The drama and conflict within this documentary raises it above a simple 'making-of' featurette and turns it into its own piece of cinema art.
It would be very much worth your time to take this one in.
