Review of Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991) by Jaye G — 29 Sep 2008
This documentary should really be subtitled Through the Fire. Probably the finest example of a warts and all background peek chronicalling the making of one of the IMO most important films ever made Hearts of Darkness is that rare documentary that makes you feel as if you're watching a fictional thriller, starring some of the most famous names in 20th century film making.
Featuring footage and dialogue filmed and recorded by Coppola's wife Eleanor this film pulls no punches. From original lead Harvey Keitel's being replaced to eventual leading man Martin Sheen's heart attack to Marlon Brando showing up on the set grossly overweight and unprepared it's all here.
Even if you don't like the movie this doc is fascinating. Famous for being not released on dvd, if you ever get an opportunity to see this rarity, take it and be grateful. Highly reccomended.
