Review of Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991) by Atlas O — 03 Apr 2008
I love movies about famous director's going up against enormous odds to make a film. I liked herzog's 'burden of dreams' and I liked this one a lot. though herzog's 'fitzcarldo' was a huge obstacle, it looks like a cake walk compared to what coppola had to go through to make his vietnam picture.
imagine changing u're main actor two weeks into production, that's a big deal, now imagine a typhoon hitting u're set and destroying it, that's pretty big, imagine u're main actor that you replaced the last actor with has a heart attack and nearly dies halfway through the film, insane.
coppola goes completely insane. what do we have in the end? the greatest film ever made about vietnam.
