Review of Hearts in Atlantis (2001) by Monsieur R — 28 Aug 2010
As willing as I was to be impressed by this film, I was terribly unimpressed. Hopkins whispers thru most of the movie, plus his accent makes this one hard to understand. My feeling is that if you don't like a movie in the first half hour, you won't like it at all. Now there are exceptions, and that is why I come back and give these films a second or third chance.... but this one blew chunks.
I suppose I will have to watch this again, but I didn't get it. It didn't make sense. Who is this man? Who are these people? Why does this boy occupy most of the film?
He has powers of perception, but aside from some carnival experience dealing with cards, we barely understand his gift.
This film is supposed to be deep... it is, but so deep I almost gave up on it. It just didn't get any traction with me.
