Review of Heartburn (1986) by R. Joseph H — 11 Oct 2017
I cannot understand Roger Ebert or Pauline Kael?s criticism of this movie. Perhaps 30 years ago the movie?s combination of heartbreak and comedy was a bit jolting. Or perhaps the reviewers were reacting to Ephron?s novel and screenplay interpretation of her divorce from *the* Carl Bernstein instead of seeing the movie as.
..a movie. I give the movie 3 stars for Ephron?s emerging brilliance as a wry raconteuse of modern life?s intimate engagements that are often fragile resulting in tragic wounds treated with the balm of comedy.
The fourth star is for Streep and Nicholson. It is a ?small? movie with superior performers speaking Ephron?s lines. How can you not see this?
