Review of Heart of Glass (1976) by Scott G — 06 Feb 2008
The film was made in a unique way in that the majority of actors in the film were hypnotized. but that's also why I didn't like the film at all. they all look like blank faces, they barely show any emotion at all, at times just looking somewhere off screen intensely for seconds on end without ever really showing anything remotely emotional about the very interesting things occurring in the film.
the premise is great, the ending result is a disappointment in my eyes. there is also the problem with the psychic who can see into the future, the problem is he only speaks in these prophecies and not much else about halfway into the movie onward to the end.
he becomes a little tiresome, you want him to break out of this hypnotic trance of reciting these old prophecies, break out of the emotionally vacant cast dwell in, but even he can't and it makes the film deathly boring.
there are great images here and there, in fact, halfway through the movie I just decided to skip the movie and watch the remaining minutes listening to herzog's commentary on the dvd which is extremely enjoyable because for all the negative things i've said about only THIS movie, I respect no director as a man and craftsman more so than herzog.
it was bound to happen to any director, you can't make a dozen films that are all incredible to every person, i've seen about 9 herzog films, i've enjoyed them all, some are just downright classic, but this one didn't excite me or capture my attention.
