Review of Heart and Souls (1993) by Min K — 19 Jan 2011
Having grown up watching this film, it's interesting to be able to notice its flaws now. But alas, my nostalgia for it wins out. Yes, the film is very Hollywood, over-the-top, schmalzy - but for me, that's what gives it its charm.
I now realize that the big "miss" for the film is the lack of development it gives to its central character, Thomas. But the story arcs of each of the four "souls" are so endearing, and some of the emotional moments so well executed, it's easy to overlook this.
And the score is also very cheesy, but what do you expect from Marc Shaiman (of Hairspray - the Musical fame). If you're looking for a feel-good movie with some heart (and forgivable plot-holes), this is a great pick!
