Review of Headhunters (2011) by Wendy K — 09 May 2012
BEST MOVIE I'VE SEEN IN 2012 SO FAR, and probably in one of my Top 10's of all time. Everybody needs to go and watch this movie!! This is definitely my kind of film. I don't even know where to start. It's basically about a business executive who has a secret life as an art thief because his current income can't afford his luxurious lifestyle. He's facing a huge debt when he meets another businessman who holds an extremely valuable antique painting. It is then, when all hell breaks loose and as the audience member, you're already clutching your heart and wondering why the hell would you pick such a heart attacking inducing movie. Because goddamn, this is a legit cinematic roller coaster ride. In the first half of the movie, I was sympathetic to the main character, Roger, but by the second half, I just wish he would -stop-, stop running, stop doing shitty things and just sacrifice himself already. (I can't endure much more!!) He undergoes so much as a character. SO MUCH. There are a zillion films where you think the characters go through so much, but there is no better example of "running away from the law(?)" than this movie. He gets shot half a billion times, bitten by a dog... Oh man, so many scary things. This movie -is not- for the faint-hearted. It's not a horror movie, but you will be incredibly creeped out (in a good way hopefully)!
In terms of all the film-related stuff like soundtrack and directing, all of them are extremely on point. The action sequences, the editing, the soundtrack!! Gosh, the soundtrack, if there was no soundtrack, I would not have been into the movie, gasping loudly in the theatre - I'm pretty sure I annoyed everyone in three-seat radius of my seat because I freaked the fuck out at so many places - and goddamn yes, screaming (however non-obnoxiously as I could) in the theatre. Hand "The Hunger Games" to a director and editing crew to this film staff, and you've got something completely different altogether. The editing in one particular scene, when the guy nearly drove himself into a garbage truck, oh my god, I thought my heart jumped out of my chest. Everytime I saw Clas' face, I got scared. (That said, I switched around and ended up cheering for him in the second half, because ugh, Roger was frustrating me. Clas is super good-looking though. I was so unsure of what to think of him. Ugh, the amazingness of casting.).
All in all, this was super exciting and probably the best adrenaline rush I've ever experienced in the theatres since... Well, I can't even remember :D (My friend commented afterwards that I was so into it while in the dark theatre... Yep, gasping at all the right scenes :D).
