Review of Headhunters (2011) by Aidan H — 05 Sep 2012
As I've noted on here previously, our northern European cousins seem to be producing some of the most mature and intense action thrillers of the last few years and Headhunters is an admirable addition to the genre.
Moody and secretive power-broker Max (played with aloof intensity by awesomely-named actor, Max Manus) moonlights as an art thief to fund his extravagant lifestyle but comes unstuck when seeking revenge on dangerous newcomer, Clas.
His attempts to swerve Clas' murderous pay-back are the film's obvious highlights but the scriptwriters neatly knit together intrigue and action, alternately whitening the knuckles and furrowing the brow.
Headhunter's de-saturated tones, polished surfaces and severe architecture suggest the murky secret behind the main character's cold persona while the taut and occasionally witty script keeps the attention focused between the bouts of violent mayhem.
While Hollywood struggles to compete against foreign thrillers, films like this are taking the crown.
