Review of Head Over Heels (2001) by Bill C — 19 Feb 2009
Head Over Heels is a inconcievable, original, seeminlgy weird zany romantic comedy, that had a handful of laugh out loud moments, but I laughed so hard at those moments, it's what caused me to reccomend this movie.
The movie stars the lovely girl next door like, Monica Potter,as Amanda, a touchup painting artist, who desperately needs a place to live on a low salary and she gets it, when she moves in with a group of supermodels who provide some very funny, (as well as some outright creepy) bits of dialogue.
Amanda meets Jim (Prinze), a charming, suave young man, while walking his dog. They seem to hit it off instantly, and some of the moments between the two are actually done quite well, but there seems like a resistance there, between the stars. Regardless, the dialogue is at least somewhat realistic.
However, when Amanda and he roomates are looking at him through the window of there apartment into his, they see him commit a cold blooded murder. This is where the movie takes a very odd turn.
It becomes dumb slapstick humor, as Amanda and the girls try to investigate like the complete idiots they are. Which is sad, because it doesen't suit Amanda's down to earth charcter to do this dumb slapstick humor. This went from being what could've been one of the funniest comedies of that year. Instead it's a good one that's merely passable.
The scenes after the "murder", provide a few very big laughs, which saved it, but everything before that I found to be VERY enjoyable.
Potter is very likable, Prinze is actually quite dynamic here, and I really enjoyed him here perhaps more than any other film.
Either way, this is good for a nice night in for the movies.
