Review of Head of State (2003) by Brian W — 13 Oct 2008
I like the premise. Along the lines of of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" and "Dave". Liked Chris Rock as the lead with his common sense understanding of politics. This movie just fell short as to where it wanted to be a slapstick/parody type comedy or a little comical but with a political message.
It didn't do either one that well. Could you imagine "Mr. Smith" with some "Three Stooges" thrown in? Bernie Mac b***h-slapping everyone and their grandma as he gets off the train just to say, "he's tough, don't mess with him" wasn't funny enough to warrant the gag.
The politics were so weak that his one dimensional political opponent should have been easily defeated by anyone with half a brain with any view of the issues (as thin as they were in this.) It could definitely have used a couple rewrites or re-edits.
Probably both. Nevertheless, I'd take Chris Rock over Obama ANY day of the week. Is there time to change the ticket?
