Review of He Named Me Malala (2015) by Amilcar A — 18 Oct 2015
You know how there are some characters you are obligated to like? Mother Theresa, MLK, Steven Spielberg...there are plenty of these. Some of their efforts and merits are really worthwhile and sometimes you are just not sure.
Malala was definitely shot in the head and that is a vulgarity. However the movie never really convinced me how much was coming from her own and how much was coming from her dad and possibly a broader machine that supports her and feeds her information.
I am by no means dismissing the enormity of what she's doing and how courageous she has been but the film feels a bit propagandist and with somewhat of an exploitative tone.
Good movie overall and if you're a self righteous Seattle hippie you will clamor for it to win all the Oscars.
