Review of He Got Game (1998) by Paul D — 30 May 2010
Hands down the worst Denzel movie I have ever seen! Though, Denzel does give another strong and powerful performance as a convict looking towards his star athlete son for redemption, he is the only redeemable thing in this long, dragged out, lethargic movie.
The idea of a star high school athlete deciding between college or the pros and all the hype and corruption that goes with the seedy underbelly of recruitment. The movie should have been better and could have been if Denzel would have had at least one reliable co-star who could act.
Too many slow parts, the dialogue should have been better, and the most absurd score to a film (not exactly sure what Spike Lee was going for with the classical music, for it never seemed to fit). A few re-writes and better casting would have made this a great sports drama.
