Review of He Got Game (1998) by Jay L — 30 May 2010
First of all, I didn't know what to expect when I saw that Ray Allen had a starring role on this movie. Let me tell you, he can act. He absolutely nailed the part of Jesus a highly anticipated basketball player on the verge of a big decision. Denzel Washington plays the part of jesus' father who also happens to be doing time for murdering his wife jesus' mother. The governor let's his father out to try to persuade Jesus to attend his Alma mater. A powerful tale of how a fathers freedom depends on his sons choice. Torn between temptations and loyalties, college ball and the pros, money and education, good and bad.
Directed by visionary director Spike Lee, who's gritty visual style gives the movie intense realism, it brings it to life. This is not a kids movie, its an intense emotional story that happens to revolve around basketball.
