Review of Haywire (2011) by Cinema_ L — 04 Oct 2012
I really wanted to like this movie but again, Soderbergh is off is his game & while Gina Carano looks as sexy as ANY Hollywood starlet, her acting skills are average at best (along with the mediocre script).
However, most of Carano's fight scenes are top notch nasty and shot the correct way, with a wide angle, showing off Çarano's badass skills. The exceptions are the combat scenes with Fassbender & McGregor, which looked like they didn't get enough rehearsal time -- their fight moves (and sometimes bad choreography) looking completely premeditated, "I step here, you throw a punch, I block.
.." Also, when you add in a ton of useless cameos along with weird elements not usually found in a spy flick you (like a deer running into a car to end a police chase or the out of place 1970's Taxi Driver"esque" soundtrack), I'll say the first thing that comes to mind, "Lame!".
So, although I usually enjoy Soderbergh and love Carano's MMA fights, overall, I was quite underwhelmed. So to keep your expectations from going haywire, lower them... a lot.
