Review of Haywire (2011) by Emmanuel S — 26 Jun 2013
Paul: I've never done a woman before.
Kenneth: Oh, you shouldn't think of her as being a woman. No, that would be a mistake.
"They left her no choice".
Steven Soderberg's Haywire happens to be a really disappointing generic action flick. Don't get me wrong there is an all star cast, cool visual style, a booming soundtrack, and action reminiscent of the Jason Bourne movies, there is just really no sense of an engaging plot or one that answers any questions at hand. As I said of the action, it's very similar to the Jason Bourne movies and its' very raw and extremely realistic. Trust me when it happens it brings the punch. The visual style and cinematography is there like usual from Soderberg with his retro 60's kind of soundtrack. The cast is outstanding and pretty underused unfortunately lead by our badass MMA chick Gina Carano. This isn't a bad first movie for her having no experience whatsoever and is a terrific physical appearance on the screen. She did all her own stunts! She's highlighted by Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Ewan McGregor, Bill Paxton, and Michael Fassbender. They do as much as they can with the screen time they each have and their good overall. It's really disappointing though not having them more around especially with guys like Michael Fassbender and Bill Paxton. Out of all the Soderberg films I've seen, this is probably his weakest. I mean how he managed to bring such a cast together and not to do anything with them kinda sucks with such a poorly written plot and short screen time. I was left unfortunately disappointed.
