Review of Havoc (2005) by Shelly — 28 Jan 2010
Fascinating as a train wreck, it's a smartly made film about some very stupid events. Beginning with an odd analysis of motivations following Anne Hathaway's "wigger" group (which verges just enough on serious to keep you from laughing too much); flowing into romanticism surrounding Freddy Rodriguez (ala Weeds and its depiction of Mexican gangsters); the film sadly falters in its third act by descending into a Gossip or Body Shots -esque soap opera about how fucking stupid people are.
Still, the film is well executed and can boast a strangely solid narrative, carried largely by its superb cast. I say, we walk away from this knowing two things whole-heartedly: one, chicks are fucked up by nature, and two, Joseph Gordon-Levitt can truly do anything.
