Review of Haunt (2014) by Brett B — 12 Mar 2014
HAUNT is almost really good. Despite its low budget, it's got a nice look, and at least a few admirably spooky images; it stumbles, however, in the handling of the supernatural elements of the story, which don't even fully come into play until the halfway mark of the movie.
Up to that point, the film is focused on the burgeoning relationship/romance between the two teenage leads; while the characterizations of these two are a little fuzzy (we're left to infer an awful lot about them and their pasts, which is fine, I guess), they're a likable enough pair, and I do respect the choice to focus squarely on this relationship first-and-foremost, with the scarier elements supporting that (more or less).
Speaking of said scary elements, there's not much in here that's truly original, but this is at least partially balanced out by a truly gutsy ending that I never saw coming; there's at least one big choice made in the last ten minutes that I really admire for its relative audacity.
It's too bad the story in total doesn't live up to its ending. Still, the relationship stuff and the ending are enough to warrant a marginal recommendation.
