Review of Hatchet II (2010) by Gary K — 25 Sep 2011
In keeping with his homage to '80s slasher films, director Green delivers a sequel with less plot, more gore, and an ending that will require "Hatchet III" to make a logical leap beyond the voodoo mumbo-jumbo explained by Rev.
Zombie. (And why wouldn't there be a "Hatchet III"?) Whereas the first film was a series of funhouse thrills in the bayou, the sequel delivers a deeper explanation of the Victor Crowley character followed by an awful lot of talking before the body count starts rising in the last 30 minutes.
The SFX are old school and over the top, which is part of the twisted appeal that drew fans to the first film. This time around, the cringes are more likely to be the result of stupid SFX sequences instead of real thrills.
Let's hope Green reigns it in the next time around.
